Hulhumalé island

Hulhumalé island with airport in distance

Hulhulé Island is the airport island with an area to the North and East that is connected to the airport by a causeway, this island is called Hulhumale and is being developed to house the ever growing population.

There are quite a few hotels and guest houses on Hulhumale with a good range of prices

This project was originally started to house the people made homeless by the tsunami in 2005

This is a very pleasant island and only 20 minutes ferry ride from Male with a long public beach which is very rocky but shallow (again as a residential island bikinis and swimsuits are not allowed).

It is advisable to wear aqua shoes / water shoes as this makes entering the water easier on the feet, there are a couple of shops and a few hotels with cafes are situated along the sea front.

This island is at present a very much a building site. however it does have the makings of a stunningly attractive residential area, we visited some friends who live on this island and their apartment was stunning, although there was a lot of building work going on around the area.

10 meters from their front door was an amazing beach that although a bit rocky was calm and as with all the Maldivian islands the sea was warm and relaxing.

There is a water-sports business on the beach which will take you on a jet-ski or banana boat.
